**Trezor.io/start® — Getting Started®**

**Welcome to the Official Trezor® Setup Portal**

Congratulations on taking the most important step in securing your digital wealth. You have purchased a Trezor® hardware wallet, the industry standard for cold storage and self-custody. This guide, presented by Trezor.io/start®, will walk you through the entire initialization process. Whether you are setting up a Trezor Model One, Model T, or the new Safe series, this comprehensive walkthrough ensures your seed phrase remains private and your assets remain secure.

**Important Notice:** This page is an educational resource designed to simulate the official onboarding experience. Always verify you are on the authentic Trezor.io domain before entering any sensitive information. This guide does not ask for your seed phrase, nor should any legitimate website ever request it.

**Chapter 1: Understanding Your Device and the "Self-Custody" Philosophy**

Before we plug anything in, we must establish the foundational concept of self-custody. When you use a Trezor® device, you are not opening a bank account; you are becoming your own bank. The private keys that control your cryptocurrency never leave the secure element of your Trezor® device.

The "Getting Started®" process is designed to be frictionless, but it requires your undivided attention. The special character in the title—the registered trademark symbol (®)—serves as a reminder that Trezor® is a brand built on transparency and open-source security. However, security is a two-way street. The device protects your keys from hackers, but it cannot protect you from phishing scams or physical theft if you do not follow the rules.

**Chapter 2: Unboxing and Physical Inspection**

Your journey begins with the physical package. When your Trezor® arrives, inspect the box carefully. The packaging should be tamper-evident. If the seal is broken, or if the device appears used or damaged, do not use it. Contact support immediately.

Inside the box, you will find:

1. The Trezor® hardware wallet.
2. A USB-C cable (or micro-USB for older models).
3. A recovery seed card (often a folded pamphlet).
4. Stickers and a lanyard (in some editions).

**Critical Warning:** Never purchase a Trezor® from a third-party marketplace like eBay or Amazon unless you are buying directly from the official Trezor® storefront. A compromised device is the single greatest threat to your crypto. The "Trezor.io/start®" process assumes you have a genuine device straight from the manufacturer.

**Chapter 3: The Digital Setup — Navigating Trezor.io/start®**

Now, let us move to the computer. The most secure way to set up your Trezor® is via the official web wallet, Trezor Suite.

1. **Connect the Device:** Use the provided cable to connect your Trezor® to your computer. The device screen will light up and display the Trezor® logo.
2. **Open the Browser:** Open a fresh browser window (Chrome, Firefox, or Brave are recommended). Type in the URL: **trezor.io/start**.
3. **Download Trezor Suite:** You will be prompted to download the Trezor Suite desktop application. While the web version works, the desktop app offers a more secure environment and better privacy features. Download the app for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
4. **Firmware Installation:** Once Trezor Suite is installed, it will detect your connected device. It will ask you to install the latest firmware. Always install the firmware directly from Trezor Suite. Do not download firmware from third-party sites. The installation may take a few minutes. Do not disconnect the device during this process.

**Chapter 4: Creating Your Wallet and Seed Phrase**

This is the most sacred part of the "Getting Started®" process. Your seed phrase (recovery seed) is the master key to your entire portfolio.

1. **Select "Create New Wallet":** On your computer screen, Trezor Suite will ask if you want to create a new wallet or recover an existing one. Select "Create New Wallet."
2. **Choose Standard or Shamir:** For most users, the "Standard" seed backup (12, 18, or 24 words) is sufficient. Advanced users may choose Shamir Backup (SLIP39), which splits the seed into multiple shares. For this guide, we will proceed with the Standard backup.
3. **The Device Screen is King:** Here is the golden rule of Trezor® security: **Your computer screen may lie; your Trezor® screen never does.** When generating the seed phrase, the words will appear ONLY on the OLED screen of your Trezor® device. Never take a photo of the screen. Never type the words into your computer.
4. **Write it Down:** Using the recovery seed card provided in the box, write down the 12, 18, or 24 words in the exact order they appear on the device screen. Use a pen. Do not use a digital notepad.
5. **Verify the Seed:** The device will ask you to confirm the order of the words by selecting them on the device itself (using the buttons or touchscreen). This ensures you wrote them down correctly.

**Chapter 5: The Recovery Seed — Your Ultimate Responsibility**

The "Trezor.io/start®" protocol emphasizes that the seed phrase is the only way to recover your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or destroyed.

* **Storage:** Store the seed card in a fireproof safe or a secure location. Consider stamping the words into metal (e.g., a Cryptosteel capsule) to protect against water and fire damage.
* **No Digital Copies:** Never store your seed phrase in a password manager, a cloud drive (Google Drive, iCloud), or a text file. Hackers scan the cloud for these word combinations.
* **No Verbal Sharing:** Trezor® support will NEVER ask for your seed phrase. If anyone asks for your 12/24 words, they are a scammer. This includes "support agents" on social media, Telegram, or Discord.

**Chapter 6: Setting a PIN and Passphrase**

After the seed phrase is confirmed, the device will ask you to set a PIN code.

* **PIN Protection:** This PIN is entered on the Trezor® device itself (or via an on-screen scrambled keypad on the computer for Model T). It prevents anyone who physically steals your device from accessing your funds.
* **The Passphrase Feature (Optional):** In Trezor Suite settings, you can enable a "Passphrase." This is an advanced feature that creates a hidden wallet. If you are a beginner, you may skip this for now. However, note that if you forget the passphrase, you lose access to that specific hidden wallet, even if you have the seed phrase.

**Chapter 7: Receiving and Sending Crypto**

Now that your wallet is initialized, you are ready to transact.

**To Receive:**

1. Open Trezor Suite.
2. Select the cryptocurrency you wish to receive (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).
3. Click "Receive."
4. **Verify on Device:** The address will be displayed on your computer screen. You must verify that the address on the computer screen matches the address displayed on your Trezor® device screen. If they match, you can copy the address and share it with the sender. If they do not match, you may have malware on your computer attempting to swap the address.

**To Send:**

1. Click "Send" in Trezor Suite.
2. Enter the recipient's address and the amount.
3. Confirm the transaction details on your computer screen.
4. **Plug in and Confirm:** You will be prompted to connect your Trezor® and physically confirm the transaction on the device screen. This physical confirmation is what makes hardware wallets so secure. Even if your computer is infected with a virus, the hacker cannot move funds without you pressing the button on the Trezor®.

**Chapter 8: Troubleshooting and Support**

The "Getting Started®" journey is usually smooth, but occasionally issues arise.

* **Device Not Recognized:** Try a different USB cable or a different USB port. Ensure you have the Trezor Bridge installed (the software that facilitates communication between the browser and the device).
* **Forgot PIN:** If you enter the wrong PIN too many times, the device will wipe itself. You can then restore your wallet using your seed phrase. This is why the seed phrase backup is mandatory.
* **Firmware Updates:** Keep the firmware updated. Trezor® releases updates to patch security vulnerabilities.

**Chapter 10: Conclusion — You Are Your Own Bank**

You have now completed the "Trezor.io/start®" guide. You have taken the leap into financial sovereignty. The device in your hand is a tool, not a magic wand. It requires maintenance, vigilance, and a healthy dose of paranoia.
